I’m Humbled by How Good I Have It. Are You?

January 25, 2019 · 2 minute read

Life goes on at such a pace that we often fail to stop and think.

Stop and think about how good we have it.

I won’t bore you to death by saying how grateful I am to live at a place and time with 24 / 7 electricity and internet connection. With access to tap water that I can safely drink. With the ability to be somewhat calm that a bomb won’t suddenly land where I am.

What really caught my mind was how much technology we get for free.

And I’m not talking about the technology where we are the product. Like Facebook or Google.

The site you’re on right now costs $9 per year to keep up.

We have so much technology available that you can buy a domain name and set up everything else for free. And I’m so grateful for it!

Grateful for Hugo - the free website builder I’m using to generate my website.

Grateful for Cloudflare providing me with a way to add safety and performance features to my website.

Grateful for Netlify hosting my static site for free, without a single ad of theirs and even allowing me to use my own domain.

Grateful for Mailgun and Gmail which, working together, allow me to send, receive and track emails sent from an email address with my own domain name. Again, for free.

Grateful for Google Tag Manager, Analytics and Facebook Pixel. Not only for existing, but for integrating together so well that it takes minutes to set them up.

Thank you!

And don’t even get me started on free software, open source electronics and… even furniture. I’m sure you could find a bunch of free services or ideas in your field as well.

Let’s acknowledge the fact that we have it well. Let’s be grateful to the paying users and investors of those services enabling us to have so much for free.

Take a survey, when asked to. Leave a review, if you love it. Say thank you in some way.

P.S. What is one free service that you love? Would love to hear!
